A team lead by Ms. Mantasha Ahmed, Honorable Member, Board of Directors, SME Foundation and Md. Sirajul Haider ndc, General Manager, SME Foundation visited Sonargaon Jamdani Tat Polli on 4th October 2021. Mr. Jayendu De, Resident Representative of International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Her Excellency Shiruzimath Sameer, High Commissioner of Republic of Maldives to Bangladesh were also present during the visit. In 2013, the traditional art of weaving Jamdani was declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In 2016, Bangladesh received geographical indication (GI) status for Jamdani Sari. The team visited a number of factories where the handmade traditional attire is weaved and exchanged views with the Jamdani weavers. The visit ended with a meeting with the weavers of Jamdani where the way forward to preserve this endangered traditional artistry and profession were discussed. In order to popularize Jamdani in the domestic and international market and to ensure conservation of this national heritage, the honorable guests emphasized on product diversification, product design development, marketing, market linkage, social and economic upliftment of the weavers during the meeting.
